Common subjects in paintings (dipinti)

The University of Bologna’s Fondazione Federico Zeri provides the most comprehensive database available for Italian art of this era. This list ranks depictions based on how often they appear in the Zeri Catalogue. Between 1250 and 1430, these subjects (here the top 12) were the most common in Italian art. They are featured in nearly 2,000 of the 3,660 paintings (dipinti) recorded in the Pittura italiana dataset of the FREDERICO ZERI Photo catalogue for this time period.

Around one third of the known paintings shows a variant of Madonna con Bambino. It is by far the most common Subject in Italian Gold-Ground Painting.
