Predella panel

A Predella panel (Italian: scomparto di predella) is a small, typically horizontal section located at the very base of a multi-paneled altarpiece. In the tradition of Italian Gold Ground painting between 1250 and 1430, the predella served as the narrative foundation for the larger, more static images displayed in the upper main sections.

Narrative Role and Function

While the central and lateral panels of an altarpiece usually featured iconic, monumental figures of the Madonna or Saints, the predella panels were reserved for storytelling.

Hagiographic Scenes: They often depicted vivid episodes from the lives of the saints featured directly above them, providing biographical context to the devotional figures.

Christological Cycles: Many predellas featured scenes from the Passion of Christ or the life of the Virgin Mary.

Visual Pedagogy: Because the predella was positioned at eye-level for the officiating priest and the faithful, it served as an accessible "visual book" that illustrated the virtues and miracles of the sacred figures.

Artistic Characteristics

Because predella panels were smaller than the main panels, they offered artists a unique space for experimentation:

Composition: The horizontal format encouraged complex landscape or architectural backgrounds, allowing artists to explore spatial depth more freely than in the gilded voids of the upper panels.

Naturalism: Artists like Duccio, Simone Martini, and Gentile da Fabriano used these small-scale scenes to introduce human emotion, movement, and anecdotal details that would have been considered too informal for the larger, more formal central panels.

Quantitative Aspects

In the scholarly classification used by the Fondazione Federico Zeri, the "scomparto di predella" is a distinct category used to identify these narrative fragments. Because altarpieces were frequently dismantled for transport or sale, these small panels were often the first to be separated from the main structure.

According to the Zeri archive, there are 415 registered objects categorized as Predella panels (scomparto di predella).
