Bernardo Daddi
1290/95 in Siena; β 1348 in Perugia - 14th century - Trecento - Florentine School
Bernardo Daddi was a prominent early Italian Renaissance painter and the leading painter of his generation in Florence. He was one of the artists who helped to revolutionize the art of the Renaissance by breaking away from the conventions of the preceding Gothic art and creating compositions that aimed to achieve a more realistic representation of reality. He was particularly skilled with small-scale works and played a significant role in the development of the portable altarpiece, a format that gained great popularity in the later years. He may have been a student of Giotto and also was influenced by the Sienese art.
The Fondazione Federico Zeri provides the most comprehensive database available for Italian art of this era and from this master. The Federico Zeri Catalogue lists 155 unique works (see list π) under Daddi Bernardo.
